The Trans Bear Cave
WIP WIP WIP Welcome to my attempt at archiving information on the subcommunity of a subcommunity of a subcommunity, which is being a transgender bear. These are a set of labels I feel at home in, and they bring me so much joy, but wow we feel so few! When searching for community, I've struggled. So, hello - I am trying to change the tides for those out there like me who are also trying to seek out information, like-minds, and representation.
Literature:
- Avi Ben-Zeev's "Calling My Deadname Home: The Trans Bear Diaries": A fantastic read, and facinating insight into Avi's life. You get a lot more than you bargain for with this book, best left for you to discover.
Content warnings for:
references to child sexual assault, very explicit sexual content, discussions of transphobia
Journalism:
- Bear Tracks: Transbears: Article by Les K Wright, from a series of articles about all different kinds of bears. A sweet little overview on a few transbears, with a nice nod to Lou Sullivan at the start.
- Bappie Kortram @ Mister Bear: Article by Maggie Baska about Bappie Kortram, the first transgender man to enter Mister Bear, which is a bear competition in the Netherlands (and may I add, WOOF!)
- "Why I Love Being a Trans, Bisexual Bear": Submitted article to Pride.com from Basil Soper, whose identity is written on the tin. Interesting perspective, especially for me who doesn't relate to the bi element. Very worthwhile read!
- Taylor Leigh - First Transgender Man to Win Mr Brighton Bear: I was obsessed with this article when I first started embracing the bear label - a wonderful little insight into his life, and the UKs bear scene.
Podcasts:
- Trans Bear Interview: An interview by COL (Cubs Out Loud, a bear centric podcast) with TB, a trans bear listener.
